Availability List - Fall 2007

Plants will be pulled for orders in the order that the requests are received. Largest plants of each cultivar will be pulled first to fill orders. Very limited availability this year on some varieties so place your orders quickly. Please list substitutions if possible. All plants will be shipped from a 1 gallon container.

Shipping, boxing and barerooting or chemical drenching (if required) will be charged in addition to the plant price. Shipping is at cost, boxing is $15 per box (1-4 plants/box, and $20 for 5-8 plants/box). There is a minimum order of $100 (excluding boxing, shipping, etc.). Chemical treatment may be free depending on what chemical treatment is required. Barerooting will be at $2 per plant (this in only needed for international shipments). International shipments require a phytosanitary certificate @$23 US. Some plants (other than magnolias) can not be shipped to some areas due to government restrictions. Sorry for this bit of bad news, but we can no longer ship into Europe or most other parts of the World due to Sudden Oak Death issues (Magnolias and MANY other genera are listed as hosts for this terrible disease, and even though we don't have the disease here in North Carolina, the entire USA is banned for exporting a wide range of plants). To the best of my knowledge, we can still ship to Canada and Norway, but this could change at any moment, so I would have to confirm with my nursery inspector before we can confirm ANY international orders. With new government and post office restrictions, shipping has become MANY times more difficult and we are going to try to limit the number of trips we must make to the post office due to these problems. My goal is to ship only on Mondays from Nov. thru the middle of December and then again April and May. We have also run into another problem with the post office, and have found out that small shipments in large boxes get charged double the normal rate! We have found a way around this and simply ship a bag of gravel along with all smaller orders to get the weight high enough for a lower shipping rate - INSANITY!!! The spring shipping season will not be available for international orders since plants will no longer be dormant at that time - sorry for any inconvenience. We will also be requiring a 25% overwintering fee for any orders that must be shipped in the spring. We simply have no space to overwinter plants easily and these orders will have to be held in space that we badly need for next season's production.
Many of you know the problems that we have faced in trying to keep our retail business going. We decided that we would continue on for this season, but we are working with a local nursery that may pick up all of our retail business in the future. We have done a limited experiment this year to see how this will work. We also have additional bad news - the weather this spring has ravaged our magnolia collection (we had hard killing freezes well after the trees were in full leave - many plants simply exploded and were dead the next day). We lost hundreds of cultivars and will not be able to rebuild the collection due to import problems (Sudden Oak Death issues again). We do still have a wide range of rare magnolias, but have lost easily 1/2 or more of our entire collection. Again, if you would like for us to continue to be able to offer rare magnolias, please purchase as many plants as you can! With your help, we will try to continue producing these rare plants.
As you will see, we are offering, for the first time this year, a number of magnolia cultivars on their own roots. We have had a lot of requests for these over the years and finally broke down and propagated part of the collection for you. We also have many other totally NEW RELEASES this year. Many exciting new plants to find a home for in your gardens.

Qty Avail Cultivar Size Description Price
7 Angelica 24-48" Mag. Cylindrica x (Mag. x soulangiana 'Sawada's Pink') selection from the late Phil Savage. Pure white flowers that retain a bowl shape through out the bloom period. This will make a medium sized tree with time. RARELY offered! $50.00
2 Arch Angel 15" M. sprengeri 'Diva' x (M. x soulangiana 'Brozzoni' with huge, heavily textured white flowers. From what I've seen, I would say that there is some pink in the flowers some years. $50.00
10 Asian Artistry (own roots) 12" M.denudata x M.sprengeri ‘Diva’ with very large (10-12") pink flowers. Very fast growing and will make a nice, single stemmed tree in a few years. $25.00
5 Blushing Belle 12-24" M. ‘Yellow Bird’ x M ‘Caerhays Belle’ selection from Dennis Ledvina. Extremely cold hardy and has large pink flowers that are similar to 'Caerhay's Belle'. Blooms fairly late and has been spectacular here in my garden! For those of you who are in colder climates but want to grow a large pink flowered magnolia. FANTASTIC plant! $50.00
10 Bronze Sentinel (own roots) 18-24" Mag. tamaulipana selection that has leaves about the same size as Mag. grandiflora, but the leaves are a beautiful dusty grey-green. This selection is also MUCH more cold hardy than the species. I have had little damage down to about zero degrees F. Below this, expect some dieback, but will likely regrow from the ground. Very beautiful as a foliage plant!!! One of my favorites. RARE and nearly never offered. Limited supply so please order quickly. $40.00
10 Butterflies 48-60" M. acuminata ‘Fertile Myrtle’ x M.denudata ‘Sawada’s Cream’ PP#7456 . Bright yellow flowers with red stamens. An excellent plant from Phil Savage. ($1 patent fee added). $50.00
3 Butterflies (own roots) 8-12" See above. $25.00
3 Candy Cane 24" A Gresham hybrid with rose colored flower fading to white at the tips and a deep rose stripe in the center of each tepal. $50.00

6 Chang Hua 24-36" Very little information available on this. A cultivar of M. amoena. $50.00
10 Coates 10-15" M. x soulangiana with small (for a M x soul.), dark purple flowers. My favorite M. x soulangiana due to the large number of flowers produced and that it blooms about two weeks later than other M. x soulangiana cultivars. Typically avoids our late frosts here.. $50.00
10 Colossus 36-48" M. sieboldii from the late August Kehr's breeding program. Reportedly a hexaploid (there seems to be some question as to the validity of this) with much larger than normal leaves and flowers. Flowers are white with red stamens and can vary from year to year (even branch to branch!) from single, semi-double to fully double flowers. Blooms off and on through most of the summer and sometimes into the fall. This is the ONLY M. sieboldii that I can grow here in our hot climate - great for both warm and cold climates! $50.00
10 Colossus (own roots) 15-18" See above. $25.00
10 Coral Lake (own roots) 6" M. ‘Legend’ x M. ‘Butterflies’ selection from the late David Leach. Beautiful orange colored flowers that often have a flush of purple and sometime green. Very unusual color and fantastic when you see a large plant in full bloom! $25.00
4 Crescendo 36" Mag. 'Yellow Lantern' open pollinated seedling (maybe father was 'Big Dude'? This selection comes from Dennis Ledvina is will be extremely cold hardy (as all his selections are). I think it has large pink flowers, but I'm not sure of that. RARE!!! $50.00
10 denudata (McCracken's Variegated" 12-24" This is my own selection of denudata that has cream splashes throughout the leaves. The very best variegated forms have all been sold already (at $150 each) and these are the plants that didn't show as much color in the leaves. We are selling them for $35 and you take the chance of the variegation not being very good (they may get better next season?). An inexpensive chance to get a very good plant - for that matter, there are NO bad Mag. denudata!!! Limited numbers available. $35.00
5 Donna 30-36" M. kobus var. loebneri with VERY LARGE (8") flowers. This is the CORRECT Donna. I have a very large collection of M. loebneri and this is by far the largest flowered selection that I have ever seen! FANTASTIC!!! $50.00
10 Donna (own roots) 6-10" See above. $25.00
2 Elisa Odenwald 24" Gresham hybrid with large, fragrant, white flowers with dark pink blush at base of tepals. Seems to be slightly later blooming than many other Greshams and has been a long time favorite at the J. C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, North Carolina. $50.00
10 Encore (own roots) 10-12" M.kobus var. loebneri ‘Ballerina’ seedling from the late August Kehr. Flowers are very pale pink (white) and multitepaled. The plant produces multiple flower buds at each internode and they open over a very extended period. Even if the flowers are damaged by cold, there are more buds coming along behind to keep the plant blooming for MANY weeks. Compact growth habit so good for small gardens. FANTASTIC plant! $25.00
2 Eva Maria 30" M. x brooklynensis hybrid with very unusual colored buds and flowers! Buds are purple with green and yellow shades and flowers open to be magenta-rose blushed with orange and yellow! WILD!!! Much nicer than it actually sounds. $50.00
10 Frank's Masterpiece 24" (M. x soulangiana 'Deep Purple Dream') x (x 'Paul Cook'). This Frank Galyon hybrid has a fairly strong central leader and semi-pendulous branches. Deep reddish-purple flowers are 10-11" across. Rarely offered and always huge demand for this one. Please order quickly to insure getting one of these beauties! $50.00
12 Fukuju 24-30" Literally no information available on this plant other than that it was formerly Nakamura # 2 (from Japan) and that it has pink flowers. Very RARE in collections. $50.00
20 Gold Finch 24-36" M.acuminata var. subcordata ‘Miss Honeybee’ x M. denudata ‘Sawada’s Cream’ selection from the late Phil Savage. Very quick grower with an upright habit. Produces large numbers of soft yellow flowers. Quickly moving up on my list of favorite yellow magnolias! $50.00
5 Golden Endeavor 10-24" M.acuminata var.subcordata ‘Miss Honeybee’ x M. ‘Sundance’ selection from the late August Kehr. This is one of my favorite yellow magnolias but has some difficulties in production, so we rarely produce it. Small, bright gold flowers. The small flower size is made up for by the masses of flowers produced. Appears to be a smaller growing tree. RARELY offered and sure to sell out quickly. $50.00
2 Hattie Carthan 12-24" M. x brooklynensis hybrid with yellow flowers and purplish stripe through the middle of each tepal. Outer tepals have a greenish blush. Very unusual and seldom offered. $50.00
10 Hawk 36-48" M.sargentiana var. robusta x M.campbellii selection from the UK. Surprising it has been hardy here in North Carolina (I suspect it will flower too early in the spring to ever bloom here). Large dark purplish red flowers (very much like Lannarth). Strong grower. I've never seen this in collections in the USA. This would be a fantastic tree for the West coast of the USA. RARE! $50.00
2 Honey Liz 15-18" M. acuminata var. subcordata 'Miss Honeybee' x (M. x 'Elisabeth') with large, floppy yellow flowers. I bloomed this for the first time this year and was blown away by the quality and color of the flower. One of the BEST yellow flowered magnolias I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!). $50.00
11 Hong Yun 36-48" I hate it when I can't find ANY information on a magnolia! Obviously very rare if there is no information!!! Be the first in your area to own one!!! $50.00
3 Illini Gold 18" NEW RELEASE in 2006. Not much information on this one I'm afraid. Yellow flowers. I have not yet bloomed this cultivar. RARE and only a few available. Order fast!!! $50.00
7 Ivory Jewel 36" Mag. 'Woodsman' x 'Big Dude'. Another selection from Dennis Ledvina that will be very cold hardy. I have not seen this flower, but would assume and Ivory colored flower (likely it would have some pink or yellow in it as well). RARE! $50.00
10 Jennifer Robinson (own roots) 6-10" Mag.x loebneri selection from Canada with 25-30+ tepals that are very light pink fading to white with age. Great foliage quality and has done very well here. RARELY offered. $25.00
5 Judy Zuk 8" M. x brooklynensis hybrid with yellow flowers and a plum colored flush at the base of the tepals and reportedly has the fragrance of fruit loops cereal! A couple of years ago, the Magnolia Society International was touring Scott Arboretum in Philadelphia and everyone that saw this plant wanted one. Sorry to say, but we only have a few available. Sure to sell out within the first hour of updating the website. ORDER QUICKLY! $50.00
1 Kinju 36" Another one of those plants that I simply can not find any information on! Certainly RARE since there is no information at all on this! Great for the collector. $50.00
12 Lois 30" M. acuminata x (M. acuminata x M. denudata). This hybrid is similar to 'Elizabeth but has deeper yellow flowers and starts to bloom as 'Elizabeth' is finishing. Fairly new, and not commonly available yet. $50.00
14 M. zenii (Cholipo form) 36" Mag. zenii selection that came from seeds from the Cholipo arboretum in Korea. From what we have seen over the years, all Mag. zenii forms seem to be very frost hardy when in flower (we have seen flowers undamaged at 24 degrees F.). There has been very limited germplasm of this species in the USA and this gives us new blood! Flowers on this are typical of the species - white to pale pink with a darker pink stripe on the outside of the tepals. Strong, upright habit. Never before offered! $50.00
10 Mag. dealbata (seedlings) 3-6" Mag. dealbata is the Mexican equivalent to Mag. macrophylla. I always thought that this plant was best for warm zone 8 and south, but have heard rumors of plants in zone 7. These plants have had a long trip - I couldn't find a seed source here in the USA, but have a friend in New Zealand that has a very beautiful tree that seeds heavily every year. So here is a Mexican species available from seeds collected in New Zealand and sold in the USA! $20.00
10 Magnolia fordiana var. yuyuensis (seedlings) 6" This truly must be one of the most beautiful evergreen trees in the World! Very long, narrow, glossy evergreen leaves and a strongly pyramidal growth habit. Even without flowers, this tree is the nicest tree we have in the garden. Our original tree took ~14 years from seed to flower (can take up to 20 years). Flowers are white with bright reddish pink stamens (looks like M. sieboldii) and face upwards. Blooms for about 3 weeks. We have been very fortunate to have a small batch of seedlings available this year - RARELY offered and we will not have any for years to come. Order quickly! $30.00
6 March Till Frost 30-36" (M. liliiflora x M. cylindrica) x M. 'Ruby'. Dark purple flowers that continue to be produced throughout the growing season. Interesting, upright growth habit. Seed cones stand upright and look like candle flames. ALWAYS in short supply and rarely available. Order quickly since they will not last!!! An excellent Kehr hybrid! $50.00
2 Margaret Helen 36" Mag. liliiflora 'Nigra' x Mag. campbellii ssp. Mollicomata selection from Vance Hooper. Flowers are large and rosy-red. Upright growth habit and free flowering. $50.00
4 Minnie Mouse (own roots) 4-6" M. liliiflora with small, dark wine red flowers on an EXTREMELY dwarf plant. Leaves are also very small. I've seen plants that were ten years old and maybe 3 feet tall. This plant has been in huge demand from me and rarely available. FINALLY I have enough stock to release a few plants. Sure to sell out very quickly! $35.00
1 Miss Honeybee 15" M. acuminata var. subcordata. Yellow flowers that are larger than the species. Reportedly produced in larger numbers than the species as well. $50.00
1 Moon Rocket 12-24" M.x veitchii x M.denudata. I can find no information on this plant, but I have seen in in bloom in New Zealand. It has large white flowers, but HAD to have been named for its buds. The buds are HUGE, white and rocket shaped! RARE! $50.00
1 nitida var. lotungensis 12" M. nitida var. lotungensis or M. lotungensis (I'm very confused yet on this one!) In my mind, the very best of the evergreen magnolias!!! Very narrow growth habit with small, EXTREMELY glossy leaves. Completely cold hardy here to a few degrees below zero f. To my knowledge, this species has not yet bloomed in the USA, but will have small, cream colored flowers. Unfortunately, very difficult to propagate and is therefore rather expensive. Certainly worth trying into zone 6. EXTREMELY LIMITED - order quickly! $75.00
3 O'Neil 18-24" M. liliiflora with dark, wine red flowers that are similar to 'Nigra' but slightly larger and darker and blooms later in the season. $50.00
2 Peachy 18-24" M.acuminata ‘Fertile Myrtle’ x M.sprengeri var. sprengeri ‘Diva’ selection from the late Phil Savage. Very fast growing tree with large leaves. Flowers are orangish red on the outside and creamy white on the inside. There are only a few "orange" flowered magnolias and this is one of the fastest growing! $50.00
3 Pegasus 15-18" M. cylindrica with creamy white flowers produced in enormous numbers! I've seen a plant in the UK that had so many flowers on it that you literally could not see the branches! This cultivar has produced some outstanding hybrids as well. Fairly slow growing and doesn't seem to make a very large plant. A truly FANTASTIC plant! $50.00
10 Purple Prince 24" M.liliiflora ‘Darkest Purple’ x (M.x soulangeana ‘Lennei’). This selection has very dark purple flowers and has a flower similar in size to 'Lennei'. Growth habit is usually a single stemmed, small tree. $50.00
5 R11-1 12-24" Mag. ashei x Mag. virginiana. For those of you who are looking for WEIRD, this is it! This selection was created by the late August Kehr and makes a small shrub with fairly small leaves (much smaller than M. ashei). I don't remember what the flower looks like, but I think it looks like a small M. ashei. RARE and WEIRD!!! $50.00
1 Red Barron 18" M. acuminata x (M. x 'Big Dude'). Flowers similar to 'Big Dude' but darker red. Very cold hardy. $50.00
2 Rose Marie 36" Pink Surprise' x 'Daybreak' selection from Dennis Ledvina. Large pink flowers (darker than 'Daybreak') that bloom very late in the season. NEW and RARE! Sure to become one of the greatest magnolias!!! $50.00
10 Rubra (own roots) 6-12" Mag. stellata selection with dark pink flowers fading to soft pink with age. Small, shrubby growth habit, so would be great for the smaller garden. $25.00
2 sieboldii x Sweet Summer 15" This is one of the most unusual crosses ever done! M. sieboldii (tetraploid form) x (M. virginiana x M. grandiflora 'Samuel Sommers'). This plant was hybridized by Frank Galyon and has yet to bloom. Most people would not realize that this isn't a M. grandiflora since it has large, evergreen leaves (totally amazing since the mother is deciduous!!!). My plant bloomed for the first time this spring and had small, fully double, white flowers with no reproductive parts at all. We had a TERRIBLE spring this year, and I suspect that the flowers had been damaged by the cold and hope that the flowers are much bigger this coming season. The I've only offered this once or twice before and will likely not produce it again for several more years. It is rather difficult to propagate so due to this and it's extreme RARITY, the price is rather high. This is potentially one of the very best magnolias that has ever been developed! $100.00
3 Southern Belle 12" M.sieboldii x ( M.tripetala x M.obovata) selection from the late August Kehr. This plant is very similar to Mag. x weisnerii, but is MUCH more heat adapted due to the Mag. tripetala parentage. Has very large leaves and white flowers with red stamens. Will make a large tree in time. This is VERY difficult to graft and it would probably be best to plant these with the graft union well underground in hopes of getting the plant to produce roots above the graft union. RARE and CHOICE! $50.00
10 Star Wars (own roots) 10-15" M. campbellii x M. liliiflora. This Blumhardt hybrid has bright pink, 10" flowers. Much more cold hardy than M. campbellii (we can grow 'Starwars' here with no problem). EXTREMELY fast growing (our fastest magnolia by far). A FANTASTIC tree! $25.00
5 Sun Sprite 12-15" An unregistered (and not officially named) selection from the late August Kehr. This is a sister seedling to his famous 'Sunspire' and has the same extremely narrow growth habit but is MUCH slower growing. At 15 years old, the original plant is not much more than 12 feet tall and about a foot wide!!! Deep golden yellow flowers with strong purple flush at base of tepals. EXTREMELY late blooming. VERY RARE and would work in even the narrowest space in your garden! Very limited. $50.00
10 Sunsation 10-15" An August Kehr hybrid with very large, golden yellow flowers with a purple blush at the base of the tepals. Flower color can vary from year to year (in warm spring temperatures, the flower color is paler yellow and more purple showing). Extremely heavy blooming and typically will bloom the first year from grafting (this is a very rare trait in yellow flowering magnolias). Growth habit is densely pyramidal (could be used in a formal garden!). VERY late blooming - one of the very latest of all spring flowering magnolias that we have, so late frosts are rarely an issue with this great plant! $50.00
10 Sunspire 8-15" M. x brooklynensis ‘Woodsman’ x M. ‘Elizabeth’ selection from the late August Kehr. Medium gold colored flowers often with a strong purplish blush at the base of the tepals. Blooms very late in the spring, so if rarely damaged by frost. Growth habit is STRONGLY upright and the foliage is dark green and beautifully ruffled along the edges. GREAT for small gardens where horizontal space is limited. $50.00
1 Tensaw (own roots) 8" Mag. virginiana. This is my FAVORITE Mag. virginiana selection!!! Leaves are tiny (about 1 inch long and 1/2 inch wide). Flowers are about 2 inches across and are produced over a long period in the summer. The plant habit is very dense and shrubby, but will make a small tree in time. EXTREMELY difficult to propagate (only one plant available out of nearly 1000 cuttings!), so the price is high. One of the most choice plants that I grow! Only one small plant available and sure to go fast! RARE and DIFFICULT to produce! $100.00
2 Treseder (own roots) 6" Mag. salicifolia. This compact selection originated at Treseder's Nursery in Cornwall, England. Typical, small white flowers. I LOVE all Mag. salicifolia and don't understand why we don't see more of these in gardens! RARE in collections. $25.00
1 Two Stones 12" M. kobus. This tetraploid was produced by August Kehr and is like a kobus but with all parts larger. Fast growing and will produce a perfectly shaped tree. The strange name came about accidentally. When August Kehr first noticed this tree in his field, he wanted to mark it for future evaluation. At the time, he didn't have anything with him to mark the tree with, so he picked up two stones from the field and put them beside the tree. Not much of a name to be sure, but an interesting story of how names can come about! My favorite, white flowering M. kobus. FANTASTIC tree!!! $50.00
3 Vegetable Garden 10-18" M. x loebneri with pink flowers and multiple tepals. Very slow growing. Selected by Camellia Forest Nursery in North Carolina and was named for the location in the garden! Rarely offered and unfortunately, I believe that the original tree has been lost. $50.00
10 White Rose (own roots) 6-8" M. x loebneri. White flowers with ~22 tepals look like small white roses.. Flowers do not droop and maintain good form until after the flower has faded. One of my MOST requested magnolias! These will sell out quickly, so order as soon as possible. $25.00
10 Wildcat 24" M kobus var. borealis x stellata. Soft pink flowers with 52 tepals! One of our MOST requested magnolias and will certainly sell out within the first hour or two. Order FAST! $50.00
10 Wildcat (own roots) 10-12" See above. $25.00
OTHER PLANTS - We produce many plants other than Magnolias. Here is a small sampling of some of the plants we grow. Many are very rare and seldom offered.
Qty Avail Cultivar Size Description Price
7 Carpinus betulus Dervaesii 24" Strongly weeping selection that forms a beautiful mounded shrub to small tree with time. $35.00
10 Carpinus betulus Fastigiata 18-24" Strongly upright growing hornbeam. As a young plant, it is typically 5-8 times as tall as it is wide. As it ages, it starts to get wider (like me!). Good golden yellow fall color. $35.00
10 Carpinus betulus Franz Fontaine 18-24" This selection is even more upright that the above! It does not tend to widen with age. $35.00
20 Franklinia alatahama 24" This is my own selection of Franklinia. It was selected for consistant brilliant red fall color and good growth habit. White flowers that look like small, single flowered Camellias (it is related to Camellia). Best in well drained, but not dry soil. $25.00
10 Liquidambar styraciflua Slender Silhouette 36-48" Selected by the great plantsman Don Shadow, this selection is very upright and will form a tall, very narrow tree with time. It does appear to produce a few of the typical "gum balls", but due to the very narrow habit, these few fruits just form a small ring of mulch around the base of the tree! Purple to yellow fall color. $40.00
10 Liriodendron tulipifera Ardis 36-48" A compact form that makes a large shrub or small tree with age. Leaves and flowers are much smaller than the typical species. One of my favorite plants in the garden! $35.00
10 Liriodendron tulipifera Arnold 24-48" A very upright growing form of tulip poplar. Still makes a large tree in time, but maintains it narrow shape. I've seen plants that were 80 feet tall and less than 8-10 feet wide! Brilliant yellow fall color and the typical green and orange flowers in the spring. Great for the narrow space in your garden. Very fast growing! $35.00
20 Metasequoia glyptostoboides Ogon 18-24" Brilliant yellow foliage on this dawn redwood is best in full sun and moist soil. Color will fade if plant is in dry soil. Fast growth rate (3'+ per year). Can be grown in shallow water. The best planting of this is at Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, NC - worth a trip there just to see these trees (the garden there is FANTASTIC!!!!!). $35.00
10 Nyssa sylvatica Autumn Cascade 18-24" The most strongly weeping Nyssa in our collection and usually has good red fall color. My favorite of the weeping Nyssa cultivars. $.00
1 Nyssa sylvatica Big Momma 10" Selected by Broken Arrow Nursery for its very large fruit and brilliant red fall color. Birds will certainly appreciate this in the garden! $45.00
3 Nyssa sylvatica Dirr 12-24" Selected by Dr. Mike Dirr. Larger and much shiner leaves than is typical of the species and brilliant red fall color. $45.00
3 Nyssa sylvatica Jermyn's Flame 12-24" A selection from England that has good fall color. Rare in collections in the USA. $45.00
10 Nyssa sylvatica Lakeside Weeper 36" Selected locally by David Parks (Camellia Forest nursery) and a friend of his. Strongly weeping, but will produce an upward growing shoot from time to time. Fall color is pale yellow. $45.00
4 Nyssa sylvatica Miss Scarlet 10-15" A new one on me - the leaves appear to be smaller than typical and from the name, I gather it has scarlet fall color. $45.00
1 Nyssa sylvatica Sheffield Park 24" Selected in England for its fall color. Rare in collections in the USA. $45.00
1 Nyssa sylvatica Wisley Bonfire 24" Selected in England for its fall color. Rare in collections in the USA. $45.00
2 Quercus dentata Pinnitifida 24" One of my favorite plants PERIOD! This oak has very large, extremely cutleaf foliage. The new growth comes out a beautiful purplish pink and is traffic stopping! Everyone that sees it, wants it! Unfortunately, it is very difficult to build up stock and is very rare in collections so the price must be high. We only see a couple of these a year since we have to keep the other plants back for stock plants. I've been building stock now for nearly 10 years and still have less than 50 plants! RARE and VERY CHOICE!!! $150.00
2 Quercus pubescens Migazziana 24" This is a new oak for me. The leaves are fairly small, about 1.5 - 2 inches long and are dark green, very thick and glossy with light brown pubescences on the bottom. This looks like it will make a beautiful tree. $35.00
10 Quercus robur Concordia 48" Bright yellow spring growth on this English oak makes it glow in the garden! EXTREMELY fast growing - one of the fastest of all oaks that I have ever seen. We can get 8 feet of growth a year from this sometimes! It produces 2-5 flushes of growth per year. Each new flush is bright yellow and then fades to a pale green. This makes a stunning specimen tree very quickly! Amazingly, handles full sun without any burn at all! $35.00
10 Quercus robur Cristata 24-30" A truly weird English oak! The leaves are completely contorted and grow primarily at the ends of the braches. This creates a very unusual "topiary" look. Strong growing and will become a small to medium sized tree. STUNNING in our garden! $35.00
1 Quercus robur Furst Schwarzenburg 8" OK, so this is the MOST expensive plant that I produce and is a bargain at this price! This oak is SLOW to produce!!!!!!! I purchased a small plant about 6-7 years ago in England (and paid a large sum for it then) and have been taking every single piece of scionwood from it that I can (plus off the plants that I have grafted from the original), and now finally after 6+ years of stock increase, I have FIVE plants!!! I'll only let one go and will probably cry when it leaves the nursery. This selection of English oak is FANTASIC - new growth is green (more or less) and quickly starts to pick up small white dots across the leaves. As summer progresses, the spots get bigger and more numerous so that by the end of the summer, the plant is nearly all white (white with small green spots)! One of the greatest variegations I have ever seen (and I've seen a LOT). Too bad it is so difficult to produce. You will never see this plant offered at your local garden center!!! RARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $250.00
5 Quercus robur Pectinata 10-15" A beautiful cutleaf form of English oak. This is a rather shrubby grower and typically makes multiple stems and will become a small tree or large shrub in time. WONDERFUL foliar effect - I wouldn't have a garden without one or two of these beauties in it! $35.00
3 Quercus robur Strypemonde 24" Another new oak for me - this English oak selection has really oddly elongated leaves. Sometime as long as 8 inches or more. They often look like strings hanging from the branches. Sometimes the leaves are more typical of the species. Certainly an oddity and would make a spectacular specimen when it gets some size to it! RARE! $35.00
10 Taxodium ascendens Prairie Sentinel 15-18" A beautiful narrowly upright selection of our native pond cypress. Foliage stands straight up on the branches and is a pale blue/grey green (like typical pond cypress). This makes a FANTASTIC, tight upright cone shaped tree and should be widely planted as a street tree. Will tolerate wet soils as will all the Taxodium listed below. $35.00
10 Taxodium distichum Cascade Falls 15-24" A strongly weeping slection of bald cypress. Without staking, this will become a large ground cover. It can easily be trained into just about any shape your can imagine (I'm training one around the eaves of my office - it makes a stunning drape this way!). It is also patented. $40.00
10 Taxodium distichum Cody's Feathers 15" std x 12" head An outstanding selection from Wooster Ohio. This is a witch's broom that has a fast growth rate UNTIL it starts to produce cones. It typically starts coning the first year. If you don't remove the cone, the plant grows 1-2" per year. If you keep the cones pulled off, then you can get 6-10" per year! Keep cones off until you have the size plant you want, and then let the cones form and the tree stops growing! PERFECT! $40.00
10 Taxodium distichum Crazy Horse 15" A really wonderful selection of bald cypress that has slightly contorted branches and leaves that look more like a juvenile juniper than a bald cypress! Very picturesque and would make a wonder bonsai! One of my favorite Taxodiums! $35.00
10 Taxodium distichum Falling Waters 15-24" A selection named by Don Shadow that reportedly has an upright central leader and then strongly cascading side branches. I seem to find it necessary to train a central leader in this, but regardless, it is a wonder bald cypress! $35.00
10 Taxodium distichum Nanjing Beauty 24" This is a recent introduction from China via David Creech. This is a hybrid between our USA native Taxodium distichum and the Mexican species Taxodium mucronatum. Reportedly shows hybrid vigor (I haven't really seen that here in my garden). RARE in collections and will make a large tree in time. $35.00
10 Taxodium distichum Pendulum 24"+ This is a really great selection I picked up in Holland several years ago. It is strongly weeping, but will slowly build up height if not staked. My original stock plant in the garden is spectacular! One of my favorite weeping trees. $35.00
20 Taxodium distichum Peve Minaret 15" WOW!!! This is one of the most AMAZING plants that I have ever seen!!! When I first saw this in Holland 3 years ago, it was love at first sight! This bald cypress forms a dwarf, columnar small tree that has extremely dark green, congested foliage. It could easily be pruned into a a pole if you removed the (few) branches that it produces. Can easily fit into the very smallest gardens (3' x 3' would be plenty of space!). I'm going to plant an entire "forest" of these along the edge of our ponds here. It looks like a giant redwood in miniature! Like all bald cypress it can grown in standing water, but is happiest in good garden soil with high fertility and plenty of water. Truly a FANTASTIC plant!!! $35.00
10 Taxodium distichum Peve Yellow 18" Yellow foliaged selection from Holland. Spring growth is bright yellow and fades to a soft greenish yellow for the summer. Fall color is bright yellow. Medium growth rate. Like all Taxodium, grows best in rich, moist soil (OK in standing water). $35.00
10 Zelkova serrata Goblin 6" This is one of the coolest dwarf plants I've seen in a long time. EXTREMELY slow growing! My original stock plant is about 6-7 years old and less than 30" tall. Would make a STUNNING bonsai. If space is an issue, this is the plant for you!!! RARE. $40.00
